Post a Shel Silverstein Poem Day

Posted by: Tara on: Thursday, May 18, 2006

This one was one of my favorites. It’s called “Sick” and it’s from his book “Where the Sidewalk Ends”.

“Sick”
by Shel Silverstein

“I cannot go to school today,”

Said little Peggy Ann McKay.

“I have the measles and the mumps,

A gash, a rash and purple bumps.

My mouth is wet, my throat is dry,

I’m going blind in my right eye.

My tonsils are as big as rocks,

I’ve counted sixteen chicken pox

And there’s one more–that’s seventeen,

And don’t you think my face looks green?

My leg is cut–my eyes are blue–

It might be instamatic flu.

I cough and sneeze and gasp and choke,

I’m sure that my left leg is broke–

My hip hurts when I move my chin,

My belly button’s caving in,

My back is wrenched, my ankle’s sprained,

My ‘pendix pains each time it rains.

My nose is cold, my toes are numb.

I have a sliver in my thumb.

My neck is stiff, my voice is weak,

I hardly whisper when I speak.

My tongue is filling up my mouth,

I think my hair is falling out.

My elbow’s bent, my spine ain’t straight,

My temperature is one-o-eight.

My brain is shrunk, I cannot hear,

There is a hole inside my ear.

I have a hangnail, and my heart is–what?

What’s that? What’s that you say?

You say today is. . .Saturday?

G’bye, I’m going out to play!”

I think I’ll use that one and just change ’school’ to ‘work’

Good plan. It is definitely a smooth transition, isn’t it? :D

I learned all my important life lessons as a child from Shel Silverstein.

I wish it was Saturday…

Thanks for the great post, Tara!

All the Woulda-Coulda-Shouldas
Layin’ in the sun,
Talkin’ ’bout the things
They woulda coulda shoulda done…
But those Woulda-Coulda-Shouldas
All ran away and hid
From one little Did.

There is no author better than Shel Silverstein. I grew up with his words and I think he had played a big part in my career choice. Check out http://www.shelsilverstein.com. It’s a really cool site. And if you haven’t heard Underwater Land, Shel’s CD with Pat Dailey, check it out. It’s definitely a classic. My kids love it, too.

Oh, you can listen to Underwater Land at http://www.underwaterland.com/listenhtm. There’s a song called Poor Anna. The play on words is great. And, plus, it’s got my name in it … makes it even better.

I will ateast to Underwater Land. It is GREAT. It is one of “my boys” favotires. :-)

Oooh, oooh, oooh! This is gonna be FUN!

Sara Cynthia Sylvia Stout,
Would not take the garbage out.
She’d scour the pots and scrape the pans,
Candy the yams and spice the hams,
But though her parents would scream and shout,
She simply would not take the garbage out.

I could go on but that poem’s rather long. But I pulled it from memory. Woo hoo!

I remember that one! Our 2nd grade teacher would read us these poems!

I can sing it, too.
